    Daughter of John Lasbury and Sarah Simpkin; wife of John Waddington Stead

    Mary Lasbury, the oldest child of John and Sarah (Simpkin) Lasbury was born January 29, 1859 near Griggsville, Illinois and passed away Tuesday morning, October 1, 1940, at the Stead home, where she lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. George A. Cadwell.

    She received her education in Walnut Grove and Griggsville Schools. On January 9th, 1884 she was united in marriage to John W. Stead who passed away on December 20, 1925. To this union were born four children. John Walter Stead of Chicago, Anne Elizabeth, wife of George A. Cadwell, William who passed away on 8th of August 1908 and Winifred Louise.

    Mrs. Stead has been a faithful communicant of the St. James' Episcopal Church ever since its establishment in this community and has always been active in its organization.

    Her interests were centered around her home and her church.

    Besides her children she leaves to mourn her loss two sisters, Mrs. C.P. Hatch and Mrs. L.W. Parker, two brothers John and Vincent Lasbury, all of Griggsville, four grand children, an number of nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.

    Mrs. Stead will be greatly missed in her church, her home and her community. She was a woman of the highest Christian character, patient and unassuming.

    The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 in St. James Church, the Rev. J.K. Putt, D.D., officiating. Burial will be held in the Griggsville, Cemetery.

    "Grant her rest eternal, o Lord, and my light perpetual shine upon her."

    Married:
    On Wednesday last, Jan. 9, 1884, at 3 p.m., a large number of invited friends gathered at St. James Church, this city, to hear the nuptial vows of Mr. John W. Stead and Miss Mary Lasbury. Rev. J.S. Colton, rector of the Church, officiated, using the beautiful marriage ceremony of the Episcopal service.

    On behalf of the trustees and communicants of St. James Church Mr. M. (Monroe) Yates publicly presented Mr. and Mrs. Stead with a handsome Bible.

    After the ceremony at the church, number of friends followed the groom and bride to the hospitable home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lasbury, Sr. where a sumptuous feast was spread, and amid social conviviality and congratulations, the time passed rapidly and pleasantly.

    The bridal party have not yet returned from a visit to St. Louis friends.

    The accomplished bride, who was a favorite of those who knew her best, was the recipient of a large number of elegant, costly and useful presents.

    Mr. Stead is one of our young, energetic, honorable business men and the Press joins their many friends in wishing them long, useful and happy careers.

    Notes:

    John Lasbury was born in Kensington, London, England, Nov. 11, 1830, and was educated in the same place.

    He learned the butcher's trade when quite young, and came to America in 1852 in a sail-ship: was 10 weeks coming from Liverpool to New Orleans, and 3 weeks from New Orleans to St. Louis.

    From St. Louis he walked to Griggsville in a deep snow, a distance of about 110 miles; this he accomplished in 3 days' time.

    He worked for the late Robert Allen, of Griggsville, for about 2 years; was the first butcher in Griggsville: supplied Griggsville and Pittsfield both with meat from one beef, and sometimes would have some left, which he would take to Perry.

    He was married March 20, 1858, to Sarah Simpkin, daughter of Thos. Simpkin, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Lasbury have 5 children, - Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, John and Vincent. Mr. L. resides on sec. 28, Griggsville tp., and is engaged in farming and stock-raising. He has some fine cattle, and he brought the first long-wooled sheep to this part of the country. These sheep were brought from Canada.

    JOHN LASBURY Snr. - The deceased John Lasbury, who passed to rest Sunday, Nov. 17, 1907, was born in Kensington, England, Nov. 11, 1830. He was a son of Benjamin and Mary Lasbury, being the second child born to the union.

    He came to America in 1851, living for a time with his uncle in Flint township, Pike county, Illinois. He Afterwards moved to Griggsville, where he has resided continuously to the time of his death.

    He was united in marriage Sarah Simpkin in Griggsville, Ill., on March 20, 1858. Had he lived until March 20 next, he would have celebrated his golden wedding anniversary.

    There were born to this union five children three daughters and two sons: Mary (Mrs. John Stead), Anne (Mrs. Charles Hatch), Elizabeth (Mrs. Louis Parker) John, all of Griggsville; and Vincent, of Chicago, all of whom survive the deceased. Two brothers, Thomas, resid-ing in Griggsville, Benjamin G., residing in London, England; and two sisters Mrs. Hearn, of Bristol, England, and Mrs. Norman, of Hammersmith, England, survive him.

    He passed nearly all of a long life in and near Griggsvllle, pursuing the occupation of farming.

    He leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who will long cherish the many sterling qualities of character which so endeared him to all who had the pleasure of his intimate acquaintance and friendship.

    May he rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him.

    The funeral service was held at St. James church Tuesday afternoon, Nov 19, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. James Maxon, of Galesburg.

    The interment was in beautiful Walnut Grove cemetery south of the city.

    The pall bearers were Dr. T. S. and Rufus Hitch Thos. Simpkin, Jr., T. M. Yates, Page Hatch and Robert Hopkins, all nephews of the deceased except one.

    The deceased Sarah (Simpkin) Lasbury, who passed to rest on Thursday, Oct. 23d, 1913, was born at Walnut Grove on November 11th, 1836. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas Simpkin and Ann, his wife.

    Her whole life was spent in the neighborhood of Griggsville, where all her children were born. She was the wife of Mr. John Lasbury to whom she was united on March 20th, 1858, and she survived him by almost six years, he having passed to his reward on Sunday, Nov. 17th, 1907.

    To this union were born five children, three daughters and two sons, Mary (Mrs. John Stead), Ann (Mrs. C. P. Hatch), Elizabeth (Mrs. Louis Parker), John, all of Griggsville; and Vincent of Chicago, all of whom survive their parents.

    Two sisters, Ann (Mrs. B. B. Hopkins), Mary (Mrs. Hitch) and Thomas Simpkin, the only brother, also survives their sister.

    There is little need to speak of the saintly character and loveable personality that has gone from the darkness of her earthly life to the light of paradise, for all knew of her sterling qualities, who had the privilege of her friendship or acquaintance.

    Suffice it to say that the whole of this township and the surrounding neighborhood sincerely mourns the departure of as good a woman as they have ever been permitted to know.

    Rest Eternal, grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. The funeral service was held at S. James' church on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2:30,conducted by the pastor.

    A large concourse of relatives and friends were present to pay their last marks of respect to their de parted loved one.

    The interment was in the beautiful Walnut Grove cemetery, where she lies side by side with her beloved partner. The pall bearers were Dr. T. S. and Rufus Hitch, T. M. Yates, Page Hatch, Walter Stead and Robert Hopkins.
