A Memorial Eucharist will be celebrated for Mary L. Meaux from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Oak Harbor on Friday, December 31, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jack M. Tench, Rector, celebrant. Inurnment will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet, Illinois. Arrangements are under the direction of Bartleson Funeral Chapel.

Mary L. Meaux was born in Griggsville, Illinois on July 30, 1906. She died at Whidbey General Hospital on December 27. She has resided in Oak Harbor since 1975, coming here from Joliet, Illinois where she made her home for over 35 years. She was retired as a Medical Librarian for Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.

Mary L. Meaux was preceded in death by her husband, John D. Meaux in December of 1962.

She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal the years she has lived in Oak Harbor.

Mrs. Meaux is survived by one son Berry Meaux and by one sister Miss Vayden Lasbury both of Oak Harbor.

Three grandchildren, Allen, Wayne and Janis and one great grandchild Jessica also survive.

FINAL RITES MONDAY FOR JOHN LASBURY

John Lasbury, son of John and Sarah Simpkin Lasbury, was born at the farm home near Griggsville on September 29th, 1866, and passed away at his residence in Griggsville November 1st, 1946. He was one of a family of five children, Mrs. John Stead, Mrs. Chas. P. Hatch, and Dr. Vincent Lasbury, who preceded him in death, and Mrs. L.W. Parker, of Griggsville, who survives him.

Mr. Lasbury received his education in teh Walnut Grove School and the Grigggsville high school. On November 16th, 1898, he was united in marriage with Miss Essie Thornberry, who passed away on December 26th, 1926. to this union were born two children, Miss Vayden Lasbury, of this city, and Mary, wife of Mr. John Meaux, of Joliet, Illinois.

Mr. Lasbury lived on the farm home until two years ago when he moved to town where he resided until his death. For several years, he has been in failing health and for a number of months, he had been confined to his home where he was cared for by his daughter, Miss Vayden. For the last several months, Mrs. Meaux has also been with him. Mr. Lasbury was a member of St. James' church and of Grigggsville Lodge No 45, A.F. & A.M.

Besides his daughters, he is survived by one grandson, Berry L. Meaux, a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., a number of nieces and nephews, and other relatives. Mr. Lasbury was quiet, unassuming, a good neighbor, friend and citizen, and will be greatly missed by his many relatives and friends. "Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord."

Funeral services were held at the Skinner Funeral Home November 5th at 10:30 a.m., conducted by the Rev. J.K. Putt, of St. James' church. Interment was in the Brown-Simpkins Cemetery.

John Lasbury was born in Kensington, London, England, Nov. 11, 1830, and was educated in the same place.

He learned the butcher's trade when quite young, and came to America in 1852 in a sail-ship: was 10 weeks coming from Liverpool to New Orleans, and 3 weeks from New Orleans to St. Louis.

From St. Louis he walked to Griggsville in a deep snow, a distance of about 110 miles; this he accomplished in 3 days' time.

He worked for the late Robert Allen, of Griggsville, for about 2 years; was the first butcher in Griggsville: supplied Griggsville and Pittsfield both with meat from one beef, and sometimes would have some left, which he would take to Perry.

He was married March 20, 1858, to Sarah Simpkin, daughter of Thos. Simpkin, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Lasbury have 5 children, - Mary, Ann, Elizabeth, John and Vincent. Mr. L. resides on sec. 28, Griggsville tp., and is engaged in farming and stock-raising. He has some fine cattle, and he brought the first long-wooled sheep to this part of the country. These sheep were brought from Canada.

JOHN LASBURY Snr. - The deceased John Lasbury, who passed to rest Sunday, Nov. 17, 1907, was born in Kensington, England, Nov. 11, 1830. He was a son of Benjamin and Mary Lasbury, being the second child born to the union.

He came to America in 1851, living for a time with his uncle in Flint township, Pike county, Illinois. He Afterwards moved to Griggsville, where he has resided continuously to the time of his death.

He was united in marriage Sarah Simpkin in Griggsville, Ill., on March 20, 1858. Had he lived until March 20 next, he would have celebrated his golden wedding anniversary.

There were born to this union five children three daughters and two sons: Mary (Mrs. John Stead), Anne (Mrs. Charles Hatch), Elizabeth (Mrs. Louis Parker) John, all of Griggsville; and Vincent, of Chicago, all of whom survive the deceased. Two brothers, Thomas, resid-ing in Griggsville, Benjamin G., residing in London, England; and two sisters Mrs. Hearn, of Bristol, England, and Mrs. Norman, of Hammersmith, England, survive him.

He passed nearly all of a long life in and near Griggsvllle, pursuing the occupation of farming.

He leaves a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who will long cherish the many sterling qualities of character which so endeared him to all who had the pleasure of his intimate acquaintance and friendship.

May he rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him.

The funeral service was held at St. James church Tuesday afternoon, Nov 19, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. James Maxon, of Galesburg.

The interment was in beautiful Walnut Grove cemetery south of the city.

The pall bearers were Dr. T. S. and Rufus Hitch Thos. Simpkin, Jr., T. M. Yates, Page Hatch and Robert Hopkins, all nephews of the deceased except one.

The deceased Sarah (Simpkin) Lasbury, who passed to rest on Thursday, Oct. 23d, 1913, was born at Walnut Grove on November 11th, 1836. She was the eldest daughter of Thomas Simpkin and Ann, his wife.

Her whole life was spent in the neighborhood of Griggsville, where all her children were born. She was the wife of Mr. John Lasbury to whom she was united on March 20th, 1858, and she survived him by almost six years, he having passed to his reward on Sunday, Nov. 17th, 1907.

To this union were born five children, three daughters and two sons, Mary (Mrs. John Stead), Ann (Mrs. C. P. Hatch), Elizabeth (Mrs. Louis Parker), John, all of Griggsville; and Vincent of Chicago, all of whom survive their parents.

Two sisters, Ann (Mrs. B. B. Hopkins), Mary (Mrs. Hitch) and Thomas Simpkin, the only brother, also survives their sister.

There is little need to speak of the saintly character and loveable personality that has gone from the darkness of her earthly life to the light of paradise, for all knew of her sterling qualities, who had the privilege of her friendship or acquaintance.

Suffice it to say that the whole of this township and the surrounding neighborhood sincerely mourns the departure of as good a woman as they have ever been permitted to know.

Rest Eternal, grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. The funeral service was held at S. James' church on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2:30,conducted by the pastor.

A large concourse of relatives and friends were present to pay their last marks of respect to their de parted loved one.

The interment was in the beautiful Walnut Grove cemetery, where she lies side by side with her beloved partner. The pall bearers were Dr. T. S. and Rufus Hitch, T. M. Yates, Page Hatch, Walter Stead and Robert Hopkins.

JAMES PELLATT (police-constable D 173.) At a quarter to nine o'clock on Thursday night last, I was on duty in Phillimore-place, Kensington I saw the prisoner walking down Phillimore-mews I followed him down and when he came to a gas-light, I saw he had something on his shoulder I stopped him, and asked what he had got he said, "Nothing he was not drunk I said I thought he had something that was not right, and he dropped 45lbs. weight of beef from his shoulder I detained him the beef was shown to Mr. Lasbury.

BENJAMIN LASBURY . I keep a butcher's shop in Kensington. I saw a piece of beef the next morning it was part of the rump and loin it was mine I had seen it safe between five and six o'clock last Thursday evening I missed it when I came home about ten it is worth about 30s. I swear it was mine.

Prisoner. I was very drunk at the time.

MARY TURNBULL LASBURY comes from a large family of siblings, many of who immigrated to America as did two of her sons. They include: Marmeduke TURNBULL, Thomas Walker TURNBULL, William TURNBULL, and Christopher TURNBULL.

Mary's grave was found and photographed by Robin Lasbury in the UK. According to Robin, Mary is buried at a small church in the village of Dundry, about 5 miles south of Bristol. The name of the church is Church of St. Michael, Dundry

THOMAS SIMPKINS

As the blushing rose sheds its perfume, and by its beauty in spring-time delights the soul of mankind, so the good works of noble men live, radiantly and sublimely beautiful, in the hearts of their fellows long after the turf grows over the earthly tenement that shuts them out from the light of the world. The immortal Scottish bard, Robert Burns, wrote of a deceased friend:--

"An honest man here lies at rest
As e'er God with his image blest;
The friend of man, the friend of truth,
The friend of age and guide of youth;
Few hearts like his with virtue warmed,
Few heads with knowledge so informed.
If there's another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this."

Such an epitaph would be extremely apropos to the subject of this sketch, whose name appears at its heading. As a pioneer of Pike county, with reminiscences of his early days, we wish particularly to deal, the aim of the publishers of this work being to do honor to the early settlers - those hardy yeoman who, in the primitive days of the county, braved the dangers that beset them on all sides, and the uncertainties of the seasons, and, through their exertions, brought the present generation into possession of the Eden of the world.

Thos. Simpkins was born in Yorkshire, England, in the year ____, and there resided until he was ___ years of age, when, becoming impressed with a desire to dwell amid the scenes of a wild and new country, he left "Merrie England" for the land where universal freedom reigned, and royalty existed with the high, the low, the rich, and the poor. Liberty, the beautiful Goddess, beckoned him, and he steered for the beacon light which she burned upon her shores, to light safely into her elysium the oppressed of all nations. On the 22d day of October, 1831, a hardy young man, this noble scion of old England struck his tent in Morgan county, in this state, determined to commence his life-struggle for fortune there; but, as time moved on, the broad prairies of old Pike, then but a wild garden, perfumed with the rich and beautiful flowers planted by the hand of Dame Nature, with but few farms and settlers, offered him a broader and better field for operation, and in 1833 he moved in, and immediately began a busy toiler in the hive with those who were then working the grand old prairies of the county, which have since made her so famous throughout the nation. His first labor was performed for Mr. W. W. Jones, who, at the time of this writing, lives in Griggsville, a hale old man, and an honored member of the community. For a long time, exposed to the rays of the scorching sun, or breasting the tempestuous winds that drove mercilessly over the waste fields, or withstanding the pelting rain and rattling hail, he delved into the soil, and with his ploughshare turned the sod of the grand prairie, receiving for his arduous labors eleven dollars per month - a very large salary at the time. Industry and prudence were his traits, and adherence thereto brought him his reward - his accumulations amounting to enough, in a very short time, to enable him to purchase an ox team, with which he set out for himself, and a very few months sufficed to find him in possession of land of his own, upon which he had the proud satisfaction of seeing, as results of his labor, waving corn and golden wheat spring up in abundance. This land is now known as the Butz farm, and is one of the many productive places in the county known as No. 1. In the year ____ he purchased the home farm.

Encouraged by his property, and becoming enamored of an estimable young lady, Miss Ann Wharton, in the year 1836 he married. To them were born six children, five of whom are living - four daughters and one son - than whom there is none in Pike county more honored and respected. Thomas, jr., succeeded to the home place, at which he now resides, where can be seen, in the thrifty and prosperous appearance of the fields, fences, outbuildings, etc., the industry and prudence of the father transmitted to the son. Sarah, the oldest daughter, is the wife of Mr. John Lasbury, one of he most prominent stock raisers, as well as one of the most thrifty farmers, in the county. Two other daughters, Anna and Mary, are married and now living in Pike county, and are most estimable ladies. The youngest daughter, Vinand, resides with her aged mother, in the lovely village of Griggsville, a comfort and a help to her in her declining years.

Mr. Simpkins, recognizing the world as a progressive one, was among the first to adopt such improvements in the manner of tilling the soil as made their appearances, from his early days to the time of his death, and is a well known fact that he was one of the first to introduce into the county a wheat drill and a self-raking reaper. Perfection in all things seemed to be the spirit that moved him, and at a very early day he imported blooded cattle, and in his latter days possessed one of the finest herds of cattle in the state. As an artist delights in his peculiar science, so delighted Mr. Simpkins in fine stock, improvement in stock raising, and the production of cereals. Hence it is no wonder that we find him one of the first to favor the establishment of agricultural and horticultural societies, and a firm friend and supporter of county fairs, and one of the founders of the Pike county organization.

The years of hard toil and anxiety he experienced in building a foundation for his family bore heavily upon him, and disease marked him as a victim as he had reached the zenith of affluence - at the time when he had just prepared to dwell among his people and be happy in seeing all of his flesh and blood enjoying the fruit of the trees planted by his own hand. In 1860 he left America to visit the scenes of his childhood, and reached there in time to tarry awhile with the friends of his youth and behold the changes that had taken place, when, called by the almighty, his spirit forsook its earthly tenement and winged its way to that haven of rest prepared in the realms of bliss for the good, while the body was laid away in the old Moulton churchyard, wherein were many whitened monuments familiar to it in life, years and years before.

A better man could not be found.
