Raymond McKim Mitchell was born on November 3, 1911, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to Charles Mitchell and Edith L. Turner. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wesleyan University in 1933 and his Juris Doctor degree from Boston University in 1941.
Mitchell enlisted as an ambulance driver with the American Field Service (AFS) during World War II. He departed from New York with AFS unit ME 39 in January 1943 and arrived in the Middle East in April. Mitchell was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in May 1944 and was subsequently wounded in action during the Italian Campaign. In July he was promoted to Lieutenant, immediately followed by the rank of Captain, and in November 1944 he was promoted to Major and served as the Commanding Officer of the AFS 485 Ambulance Car Company in Italy before being repatriated to the United States in June 1945. By the end of the war, Mitchell had served in the Middle East (Syria), North Africa, and Italy, including seeing action in Italy during the crossing of Volturno River and at the Battle of Monte Cassino. Mitchell received the United States Armed Forces Good Conduct Award, the World War II Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal for his services during the war. King George VI and Queen Mary appointed him as honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1945 for his service with the British Eighth Army, a distinction earned by only eleven AFS officers in World War II. Mitchell received the OBE medal on December 17, 1946 from Lord Inverchapel, British Ambassador the United States at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. Mitchell's involvement with AFS continued in the post-war years when he was elected to the AFS Board of Directors and founded the Greater New Bedford Chapter of the AFS International Student Scholarship Program with his wife, Marian, in 1953. He served as the chapter's president and hosted students from Italy, Austria, and Japan.
In addition to his commitments with AFS, Mitchell served as a legal partner with his father and then with his son at Mitchell and Mitchell in New Bedford, where he practiced law for fifty years. Mitchell was also involved with local civic organizations in various capacities throughout his life, which included service as longtime trustee and member of the board of investment in the New Bedford Institution for Savings, treasurer of the New Bedford Port Society, chairman of the Greater New Bedford Community Chest campaign, moderator of the Fairhaven Town Meeting and Town Counsel, first New Bedford member of the National Council of the YMCA, trustee of the Millicent Library in Fairhaven, and past president of the YMCA of Greater New Bedford, the Fairhaven Improvement Association, the English-Speaking Union of Southeastern Massachusetts, and the New Bedford Board of Commerce.
Raymond McKim Mitchell died on May 5, 2001, at age 90.
The Raymond M. Mitchell Collection was donated to the Archives of the American Field Service and AFS Intercultural Programs by his son, Charles M. Mitchell, and other members of the Mitchell family in various stages between December 1999 and June 2006.

Rebecca (Becky) Bump, born Rebecca Lynn Vasile, left this world suddenly on September 1, 2020, at the age of 36. Gone far too soon, her death brings great sadness to her family, friends and all those who knew her.
Becky was the beloved and adored wife of 13 years to Jonathan Bump, although she had known and loved him for 19 years, and a caring, dedicated, and proud mother to Brooke and Jonathan Jr., ages 9 and 7. Becky was born in Hartford and grew up in Enfield. Her loving parents and brother enjoyed wonderful experiences and travels with her during her childhood, including summer vacations to Cape Cod and New Hampshire with friends and family. Becky loved to dance - a passion she later passed down to her daughter, Brooke. She graduated from Enfield High School and enjoyed going to Dave Matthews concerts with her friends, who will always remember Becky for her kindness, generosity, and sense of humor.
After meeting and falling in love as teenagers, Becky and Jonathan built their life together in Enfield, surrounded by extended families that loved them unconditionally. Becky's calm disposition and kind spirit lent themselves naturally to early childhood education - a career she excelled in after graduating from Central Connecticut State University.
Even while pursuing her professional career, Becky lived every day for her family. Her husband will remember their long motorcycle rides together, their adventures to the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Disney World, and Las Vegas, as well as an amazing trip to England for her birthday, where they especially enjoyed the opportunity to visit London. Her children will remember trips to Six Flags, New York City, Boston, the beach, camping and countless other family trips and adventures. Becky loved making every holiday special for her kids, and often visited multiple houses on Christmas so that Brooke and Jonathan Jr. never missed out on both her and Jonathan's family traditions like Italian cookies, trips to see neighborhood lights and decorations, lasagna and Papa's meatballs, Christmas Eve pajamas, and beautiful hand-knit stockings.
In addition to her husband and children, Becky is survived by her parents, Anthony and Barbara Vasile, and their family including Becky's brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Nicole Vasile, and her grandfather, Ernest Lederman. She is also survived by Jonathan's parents, Allen and Karen Bump, and their family including Jonathan's brother, Allen Bump III and his long-time girlfriend Kacie Wilbur, sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Giovanni Enriquez, and grandmother, Mary Lasbury. Becky will be reunited in heaven with her grandmother, Barbara Lederman.
Becky also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and beloved friends who deeply mourn her passing. This loss has left the Bump and Vasile families with a wound that can never be healed. The kindness of so many in their community has been overwhelming. The family would especially like to thank Tony and Anthony Scussel from The Growth Company, as well as All Waste Inc. for their tremendous generosity and support. Finally, Jonathan would like to thank his brothers in the Warlocks Motorcycle Club for all of the incredible help they have given him and his family.
The funeral service will be private, however those wishing to pay their respects to Becky and her family may do so from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020, at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. Please note that masks and social distancing are required for all visitors attending.
