512 For over four decades Boris Karloff terrified movie audiences by playing monsters, mad scientists and other menacing characters. He will be forever remembered for his portrayal of Frankenstein's creation "The Monster" in the classic 1931 picture "Frankenstein." He repeated the role in the sequel "The Bride of Frankenstein" (1935).

In real life, Karloff (who possessed a memorable, gentle voice) was a charming, sweet and good-natured person, a contrast to his on-screen characters. Born William Henry Pratt, in the London, England suburb of Dulwich his father Edward was a civil servant who died during William's early youth.

He studied at King's College in London, initially preparing for a career as a diplomat, however he developed an interest in the theatre and after marrying for the first time, he relocated to Canada in 1910. During this period, he took the name Boris Karloff (the last name was from his mother's side) and worked his way to Western Canada, as he held such occupations as a land-clearer on a farm, shoveling coal and laying tracks for street- cars.

After settling in Vancouver, he joined his first repertory company and would go on to perform in scores of plays in Canada and the United States over the next several years. During a stay in Los Angeles, he made his motion picture debut as an extra in the film "The Dumb Girl of Portici" (1916).

For the next fifteen years, he played a wide range of parts, in scores of films, before achieving stardom as the "Frankenstein Monster." It took legendary makeup artist Jack Pierce several hours each day to perfect Karloff's appearance in preparation for filming.

521 Fred Whittock of Holmedene, Paulton Road, Midsomer Norton who was last seen alive on the 11 March 1947 and whose dead body was found 11 March 1947 at the age of 60 at Thickett Mead, Midsomer Norton giving probate to Annie Keziah Whittock his widow and Edwin George Whittock carpenter and joiner. He was buried St John the Baptist, Midsomer Norton.

An inquest was held and Fred's body was found lying on the highway near the railway bridge at Thicket Mead on 11 March. Evidence of identification was given by Edwin George Whittock (a son) who said his father was a stone mason and bricklayer. About 1943 or 1944 he developed heart trouble. He was attended by Dr Widgery of Midsomer Norton who warned him not to do any heavy work. He was found by William Edwin Bowell who saw something lying in the side of the road as he was driving his van. When he got out he found the man and there was a bag of coal lying nearby. William took Fred to Paulton Hospital.

Dr Widgery gave evidence saying Fred was suffering from Angina Pectoris. He last saw Fred October 14 when he told Fred he must not do any heavy work. He formed the opinion that Fred died from syncope due to coronony thombosis (a blood clot in the arteries of the heart). He also said death was probably accelerated by deceased carrying an undue wight.

A Coroner recorded a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

522 Frederick Charles Davidge died 26 February 1913 Vinegar Down Quarry.

When working in the quarry alone he, was trying by means of a winch and rope to pull out a prop set to support the roof of a chamber cut out of the solid rock. After several attempts he went into the chamber, and whilst there the roof over the whole area of the chamber, some 18 feet by 15 feet, fell, and he was killed. His son had by chance gone into the quarry to speak to him on a private matter and witnessed the whole of the operations in regard to the removal of the prop: there was thus no room for doubt as to what he had been doing when he met his death.

529 Frome Hero in Flying Boat Accident

Sorrow has been brought to several West Country homes by the Sicilian disaster to the RAF flying boat, which crashed on a mountain with the loss of nine lives on February 15th. One of the victims is Corporal Stephen Thomas Bailey, who belonged to Frome, and has relatives in Bath.

He was 29. Twelve years ago he plunged into the swollen river Frome and saved a child from drowning, afterwards restoring it to consciousness by the use of artificial respiration. His pluck was recognised by the Royal Humane Society and by the people of Frome, who presented him with a monetary testimonial.

Bailey, who was then a Territorial learned his life saving under Mr C. Ivor Young now chairman of the local urban council. He had been looking forward to the experience of being a member of the flying boat crew.

Corp. Stephen Thomas Bailey, one of the victims was the 29 year old son of the late Frank Bailey, and of Mrs Short, of 11 Willow Vale Frome.

He was one of a family of nine, and was the fourth son.

Very well known in the town of his birth, he was a local hero for 12 years ago he plunged into the flooded river Frome at Willow Vale and rescued a child named Dennis from drowning. For his gallant act he was awarded the Life-Saving Certificate of the Royal Humane Society, and the townspeople presented him with a suitably inscribed gold watch.

One of his sisters is Mrs H J Rogers, wife of the licencee of Fuller's Wine Vaults, Quiet St, Bath. A representative of this paper saw Mr Rogers' daughter at Quiet Street on Saturday. My uncle came to Bath a fortnight before he left England on Jan 15th she said. We heard the tragic news over the wireless at 9.30 on Friday and at once got in touch with the Frome Police. We knew that he was in the flying boat concerned. 'My uncle was engaged to marry a London girl'

Mr Bailey had resided in Frome all his life. He went to the Wesleyan Boys School and on leaving worked for Mr Ivor Young, who is now the Chairman of the Frome Urban Council before joining the RAF. Last year he was among the members of the RAF who accompanied Sir Philip Sassoon to Alexandria in Egypt. He came home on leave and spent Christmas with his family in Frome.

A 19 year old brother who works for Mr John Lewis the Frome butcher lives with his mother at Willow Vale. When he was living in Frome Corporal Bailey was a great swimmer and was a member of the Frome Swimming Club.
