- Winifred Ivy Payne was found dead at Cheddar Gorge. Her neck was broken, the centre of her back badly bruised and her face covered in scratches and bruises. Her left ankle was also broken. Winifred had paid Dorothy Pavey twopence to go up the steps to the top of the hill. She had left her bicycle there.
Her mother said her daughter had been working at Chew Magna Post Office and she had missed a stroke on a wire which was apparently very important. She said I have one last week with the stroke and didn't put it in. She fainted and from that time broke down. She came home a fortnight later of her own accord giving up work altogether. She could not sleep and kept repeating "I have got to go to gaol for this". For the past three weeks she had been consoled by hearing that the wire has gone through all right.
An open verdict of found dead at the bottom of Wind Rock in Cheddar Gorge was returned.
