This the last will and testament of me Thomas lasbury of Stroud in the county of Gloucestershire, shopkeeper and beerseller I give and devise unto my son Thomas lasbury all that Mesonage Tenement or Dwelling house with the garden and appurtenances ?????? belonging situate in Parliament Street in Stroud aforesaid purchased by me of Hester Hogg and ???? my occupations

And also that piece or parcel of land situate at the upper part of Garney's Leaze in Stroud aforesaid and purchased by me of William Hopson together with the seven Mesonages or Dwelling Houses lately ceeded by me thereon to hold the same with their respective ?????????? unto and to the use of my said son Thomas Lasbury hevis and ofsigns for ever

Also I give and devise unto my said son Thomas Lasbury all that freehold Mesonage tenements or dwelling house with the garden and appurtenances ????? belonging in situate Parliament Street in Stroud aforesaid purchased by me of Hester Hogg and now in my occupation.

And also all that freehold piece or parcel of land situate at the appro part of Garney Leaze in accord aforesaid and purchased by me of William Hopson together with the seven Mesonages or dwelling houses lately ???????? by me ????????? tohold the same with their respective appurtenances into and to the use of my said son Thomas Lasbury his hevis and asigns forever

Also I give and devise unto my said son Thomas Lasbury all that freehold Mesonages ????????? or dwelling house and shop with the garden ground and appurtenances there unto and joining and belonging situates in parliament Street in Stroud aforesaid late in the occupation of Peter Steel and son of Robert Holder and purchased by me of Thomas Clarkes to hold the same unto and to the use of my said son Thomas Lasbury his hevis and ofsigns forever charged nevertheless and I do hereby charge the said last mentioned Mesonage and hereditorments with the payment of the sum of one hundred and five pounds to my son John Lasbury at the end of twelve calendar months next after my deceased which sum shall not bear interest in the meantime I give and devise unto my grandson Henry Lockyer son of my late daughter.

All that freehold Mesonages tenement or dwelling house with the garden and appurtenances there unto belonging situate in a lane or alley adjoining the old chapel burial ground leading from Old Chapel Street for Parliament Street in Stroud aforesaid formerly belonging to Hester Hogg and now in the occupation of George Burrows to hold the same unto and to the use of my said grandson Henry Lockyer his hevis and assigns forever.

Provided and my will is that until my said grandson shall the age of twenty one years my said Thomas Lasbury shall receive the rent thereof and pay and apply the same for the benefit of my said grandson as my said son Thomas Lasbury shall in his discretion think proper.

Provided also that in case my said grandson shall not attain the age of twenty one years then I give and devise the said last mentioned Mesonage and hereditaments unto and to the use of my said son Thomas Lasbury his hevis and assigns forever.

I give and bequeth unto my said grandson Henry Lockyer my watch and its appendages and all and singular my household goods and furniture stock in trade monies personal estate and affects not h??????before bequethed I give and bequeth unto my said son Thomas lasbury for his own use and benefit subject to the payment of my just debts funeral and testamen?? expenses.

And I appoint my said son Thomas Lasbury executor of this my will and do hereby revoke all wills and codicils by me at any time herebefore made and declare this only to be my last will and testament.

George Lasbury, above mentioned, was born in England, October 25, 1819, and died in 1906 at Broad Brook, Connecticut.

At an early age he left home and school to help his parents, as he was the oldest of a large family of children. He was employed in the woolen mills of Bradford, England, his native town, and by his industry worked up until he became overseer of fulling. He learned the trade of finishing.

He married (first) in 1840, in England, Fannie Sylcox, and came to this country alone the following year. Speaking the same language, feeling the brotherhood in our Common ancestry, he became an American in the best sense of the word.

His wife and son arrived in America a year and a half later, and they located at Webster, Massachusetts. Mr. Lasbury worked first in the mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, then later removed from there to Broad Brook, Connecticut, where he resided for about fifty years.

By industry and economy he saved enough from his modest income to buy a farm in the southern part of Broad Brook. Enjoying the respect and confidence of the people of all the vicinity, he spent his last years on this place, and his memory is still honored by all who knew him.

By his first wife, who died in 1852, there were the following children: Edward G., married Jeanette Guernsey, Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Morgan, of New York; Emma, married Oscar Willey, of Broad Brook; Addie T., wife of Gilbert Nabel.

Mr. Lasbury married (second) in 1854, Sarah Morgan and their children were Mattie M., resides in Redding, Massachusetts; William Morgan, the subject of our sketch; and George B. of Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Sarah (Morgan) Lasbury died in September, 1865.

George Lasbury married (third) Mrs. Esther Allen., and their children are: Charles, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio; Ralph C. of further mention; James N.; and Harry L.

The family have long been members of the Congregational church of Broad Brook.

During the recent World War there were many American business men, who though practically retired from active business duties, came again to the front at their Country's time of need, and who were important factors in many phases of the work necessary to carry on that great struggle to a successful close.

One of these men was William Morgan Lasbury, of Broad Brook, and Enfield, Connecticut. He possessed capabilities of great value, which he used untiringly, thereby receiving well-deserved merit.

The name of Lasbury is derived from Lasborough, a parish in County of Gloucester, England, a section long famed for its citizens. George Lasbury the father of our subject was a son of Benjamin Lasbury and Sarah Easbury. The latter lived and died in England, and after his death, his widow, Sarah, came to America, where she resided with her son, George, until her death, which occurred in the early seventies.

George Lasbury, above mentioned, was born in England, October 25, 1819, and died in 1906 at Broad Brook, Connecticut. At an early age he left home and school to help his parents, as he was the oldest of a large family of children. He was employed in the woolen mills of Bradford, England, his native town, and by his industry worked up until he became overseer of fulling. He learned the trade of finishing. He married (first) in 1840, in England, Fannie Sylcox, and came to this country alone the following year.

Speaking the same language, feeling the brotherhood in our Common ancestry, he became an American in the best sense of the word. His wife and son arrived in America a year and a half later, and they located at Webster, Massachusetts. Mr. Lasbury worked first in the mills of Lowell, Massachusetts, then later removed from there to Broad Brook, Connecticut, where he resided for about fifty years.

By industry and economy he saved enough from his modest income to buy a farm in the southern part of Broad Brook. Enjoying the respect and confidence of the people of all the vicinity, he spent his last years on this place, and his memory is still honored by all who knew him.

By his first wife, who died in 1852, there were the following children: Edward G., married ____ , Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Morgan, of New York; Emma, married Oscar Willey, of Broad Brook; Addie T., wife of Gilbert Nabel.

Mr. Lasbury married (second) in 1854, Sarah Morgan and their children were Mattie M., resides in Redding, Massachusetts; William Morgan, the subject of our sketch; and George B. of Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Sarah (Morgan) Lasbury died in September, 1865.

George Lasbury married (third) Mrs. Esther Allen., and their children are: Charles, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio; Ralph C. of further mention; James N.; and Harry L.

The family have long been members of the Congregational church of Broad Brook. William Morgan Lasbury was born November 15, 1857, in Broad Brook, and attended the schools of that town, and the Eastman Business College of Poughkeepsie, New York. Subsequently he entered a country store as a clerk and after gaining sufficient experience, he purchased a store in Hartford, which he conducted for two years. He was then in the employ of the Belding Brothers Company, silk manufacturers, for three years as a bookkeeper. Returning to his native town, he secured a position with the Broad Brook Woolen Company and this marked the beginning of a career in the manufacturing business that has been one of marked success. He rose through various grades as his abilities increased and became paymaster, then assistant superintendent, and eventually superintendent.

From Broad Brook, Mr. Lasbury went to the American Woolen Company of Boston, and there he was in charge of the Fitchburg Worsted and the Beoli Mills of that company, both located in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He was later transferred to the Assacet Mills at Maynard, Massachusetts. At the latter place there were twenty- eight hundred employees, being the largest mill in the world.

In 1914 Mr. Lasbury retired from the cares of business, and purchased a farm on Enfield Street, in the town of Enfield, having decided to take a complete rest. His health had suffered severely through the ardous cares of his work and for a year led a quiet, peaceful life on his farm. In 1915 he was urged to return to the American Woolen Company, and assumed charge of the Worsted Division of the eighteen mills, of thirty five thousand employees.

Then came the outbreak of the war and the great work of preparation began. One of the most important items was the clothing of the soldiers, and second to that was the having in charge of the selecting of this material, a man of high integrity, broad experience, and with a natural love of country and honor. Such a man is Mr. Lasbury, who during the war held this responsibility, being a member of the Fabric War Committee, and performed the duties involved in a manner that has brought him material success and a position of honor.

Mr. Lasbury is now retired, living on his beautiful farm.

He married, September 27, 1880, Nellie P. Davenport, daughter of Henry A. and Pamelia (Landon) Davenport. Their children are: Alma Louise, born December 30, 1883 and Howard A., December 24,1885.

The latter married Ann While, and resides in Brookline, Massachusetts; he is in the employ of the America Woolen Company of Boston.

Mr. Lasbury is a Republican, and fraternally is a member of Oriental Lodge, No. 11, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. With his family he attends the Congregational church of Enfield.

William Morgan Lasbury, 75, for ,many years an executive of the American Woolen Company, died at his home in Enfield Street Friday after a short illness, He had been retired since 1918. Born in Broad Brook Mr Lasbury began his career in the textile field at the Bolding Brothers silk mills, Rockville. Later he worked in Broad Brook mills and in 1906 went to the American Woolen Company. He resigned in 1913 but returned to the company two years later to become the head of its worsted division

Ralph C. Lasbury Sr., South Windsor tobacco grower and packer, and owner of many light-harness racing horses, died yesterday in the Hartford Hospital. His age was 69.
Starting as a grower at at 14, while yet a schoolboy, Mr. Lasbury developed a 200 acre plantation, employed sixty field hands and had a payroll of 100 packers. In 1924 he entered the real estate business in Florida but five years later resumed tobacco growing on a 500 acre tract.
He was the owner of Earle Jr., familiarly known as the "War Horse", said to have been the most consistent horse ever to run on a track in this country. His time was 2:04 1/4.

Ralph married Eloise Jane Thrall in 1900. Eloise (daughter of Moses Thrall and Adelaide S. Died:
Sidney Alfred Lasbury was one of 439 miners killed on 14th October 1913 in Britain's worst coal mining disaster at Universal Colliery, Senghenydd in the South Wales Valleys. The explosion was believed to have been caused by firedamp (methane) ignited by electrical signalling equipment.

Sidney Alfred Lasbury, 26 and his brother William Henry Lasbury, 23 were both working underground at the time of the explosion.

They were rescued from the pit but were both believed to be dead so their bodies were laid out side by side amongst the numerous other victims at the pit head.

Sidney Alfred had indeed perished but his brother William Henry suddenly showed signs of life and received immediate medical attention.

Their father Walter Alfred Lasbury was returning from holiday when he heard news of the disaster and immediately travelled to South Wales to be with his sons.

Sidney Alfred Lasbury was buried in a cemetery close to the colliery in Senghenydd.

William Henry Lasbury later moved to Doncaster in Yorkshire with his wife Alice Jane Canter. They had two children, William Leslie and Mildred.

William died in 1972 at the age of 82.

There was only one who survived the explosion, W.H. Lasbury, an assistant
timberman. He went down the York shaft on the morning of the explosion at about 7.50a.m. and went to the West York by the return.

He then went about 20 to 30 yards below the engine on the York West incline when he heard a dull report. He was enveloped in a cloud of dust, which travelled from behind him and he lost his light. He fell forwards and he called to the engineman asking if he was all right to which he replied that he was. He turned back to the pit and groped his way out.

As he neared the cross cut he heard a sound as of air rushing through the doors in
its ordinary way. As he drew near the doors crashed open and he heard a splintering sound and he staggered back just on the inbye side of the doors, collected himself and staggered to the bottom of the York shaft where he dropped.

This gave an idication that there had been two explosions.

The Naples War Cemetery lies in the locality of Miano at Via Vincenzo Ianfolla, off the Corso Secondigliano, in the Commune and Province of Naples. Take the autostrada A1, the Rome to Naples road. After the last toll booth, carry on following the signs for the airport. Pass the end of the airport approach road and turn right at the next T junction, following the main road for about 4 kilometres.

On 3 September 1943 the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, the invasion coinciding with an armistice made with the Italians who then re-entered the war on the Allied side. Allied objectives were to draw German troops from the Russian front and more particularly from France, where an offensive was planned for the following year. The 65th and 92nd General Hospitals were in Naples from late in 1943 until the end of the war, also the 67th General Hospital for the greater part of that time. The site for the war cemetery was chosen in November 1943 and burials were made in it from the hospitals and garrison. Later graves were brought in from a number of small cemeteries in the immediate vicinity.

Naples War Cemetery contains 1202 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War. There are also some non war burials and war graves of other nationalities.

Lasbury, Connecticut Valley head who wrought labor reform, dies
Ralph C. Lasbury Jr., one of the colorful figures in the history of tobacco-growing in the Connecticut River Valley, died March 18 at his winter home, Winter Park, Fla. Death came suddenly from a heart attack. He was 72. Under Lasbury's direction, the valley's growers of high-priced cigar-wrapper leaf drew national attention in the improvement of migrant farm workers' working and housing conditions. He was executive director of the Shade Tobacco Growers Agricultural Association in Connecticut and Massachusetts for 26 years, until retirement in 1968. At his retirement, the then- president of the association, Gerrit Krot. declared that no man in contemporary American agriculture contributed more to the industry's welfare. Such contributions were also referred to by Krot when Doris Rockwell, Lasbury's assistant, retired at the same time. He said she "also pioneered in capably administering the association's Youth Camp Program, the biggest farm youth employment program in the country, as well as our Farm Workers Hospital, the first and still the only establishment of its kind. " A tall, spare man, Lasbury was an outspoken individualist. He worked hard and played hard, taking pride in his ability to hunt ducks and coons, and to judge and ride horses. He was also proud of the fact that, to some extent, Indian blood flowed in his veins. Comparatively few knew that his middle name was Cherokee, his paternal grandmother being a member of that tribe. This in no way conflicted with the fact that one of the gifts of the American Indian to modern society was tobacco. Outside the door to his office stood a cigar-store Indian, and on the wall behind his desk hung a picture of one of his favorite horses. At a birthday party some time ago for a now-deceased grower named Thrall, Lasbury paid one of his highest tributes when declaring, "Oliver J. Thrall is the best coon-hunter in New England." Another hobby was collecting antique duck decoys, 200 of which Lasbury once owned. He helped popularize the Morgan horse and was the owner of the former national champion gelding, Windcrest Fireball. Lasbury was the first president of the Connecticut Morgan Horse Club. One of his first memories of the tobacco business occurred when, hardly old enough to walk, he was strapped to the buckboard of his father's wagon and rode while the older Lasbury inspected his 225 acres of broadleaf tobacco, grown for use as cigar binder

Lasbury finished his high school education in Winter Park, Fla., after his father sold his tobacco farm and moved south. While completing his education at Rollins College in Winter Park, he met his future wife, Cecilia Justice Chase. Mrs. Lasbury's family established Chase Groves, near Orlando, in which citrus business the fourth generation is still in active operation.

Ralph Lasbury returned to Connecticut and was appointed the first executive director of the Shade Tobacco Group in 1942 as a result of criticism aimed by the Connecticut State Department of Labor at the conditions surrounding employment of youth in tobacco fields and sheds. Children only eight years of age worked 9 1/2 hours a day, six days a week on some farms; there was criticism of housing, unsanitary living conditions, unsafe transportation, and lack of supervision in some cases.

Lasbury was called to his job as a result of his volunteer work with the Connecticut Defense Council at the outbreak of World War II, when he was assigned to take charge of farm labor. As his first job with the shade group, he drew up corrective regulations and obtained acceptance by the growers. The regulations were put in effect voluntarily in 1942, becoming the basis for Connecticut's pioneering Farm Labor Youth Law of 1947.

During the harvest season, 1968, Senator Harrison Williams of New Jersey. chairman of the Senate Migratory Labor Committee, inspected the shade growers' labor camp in Windsor, Conn.. with its modern housing, recreational and cafeteria facilities, representing a $2,000,000 investment. The association's operation was the "most enlightened" of any employer group in the nation he had visited, Senator Wiliams said. That year the shade growers employed a peak total of 20,000 farm hands with a $27 million payroll. Beginning with Lasbury's appointment and lasting until a few years after his retirement, growers operated a unique program, bringing West Indian residents annually for the season. They formed a core of experienced farm adults. Thousands annually were thus recruited, under a contract providing round trip air fare. Jamaicans were hired for many years, until enactment of alien work laws caused a switch to Puerto Ricans. Four years ago, after protracted labor troubles, the importation program was dropped, and domestic labor substituted.

A memorial service for Ralph Lasbury will be held May 19 at. 2:00 p.m. at the Congregational Church of South Windsor, Conn., in this the town where he lived most of his life.

Ralph C. Lasbury, Jr. was born September 4, 1906, in the Broad Brook section of East Windsor, Connecticut. He was the second child of Ralph C. Lasbury and Eloise Thrall. Lasbury Senior was one of Connecticut's important broadleaf tobacco growers. At one point, he had 500 acres of broadleaf growing.

As a young boy, Ralph C. Lasbury, Jr. worked tobacco every summer. After high school, he went to Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. He then worked for his father at the South Windsor Tobacco Company.

In the early 1930's, Mr. Lasbury worked for Henry Trumbull in Plainville, Connecticut. He developed a type of humus for tobacco beds and received much praise from the shade tobacco growers.

In 1939, he was appointed as the first Chairman of the Connecticut Marketing Authority in Hartford. He held that position until 1978. The Connecticut Regional Market in Hartford was one of his major accomplishments.

Mr. Lasbury was appointed to the Farm Labor Committee of the State Defense Council in 1941. He and a number of tobacco men, including William S. Fuller, Albert Newfield, Lamarr Monroe, and Charles Huntington, developed a code of standards for tobacco workers. Hours, housing, and sanitary conditions were included in the unprecedented code.

On November 30, 1942, Mr. Lasbury was hired as Executive Director of the Shade Tobacco Growers Agricultural Association. The first offices were established at 148 State Street in Hartford, Connecticut.

One of his first duties was to develop a workable labor program. His program included the establishment of attractive youth camps, adult guidance proposals, and a "day-haul" system so that local teachers and students could earn extra money. Also, many corrective regulations were drawn up. These became the basis for the Farm Labor Law of 1947.

Mr. Lasbury's job as spokesman for the tobacco growers brought him to the State Legislature. He also went to Washington to participate in Congressional hearings on tobacco labor and production problems.

One of Mr. Lasbury's proficiencies was his public relations work. He and the Association produced a documentary film on shade tobacco. The film served as a teaching tool for the public and the sales people of the cigar industry.

The 1960's saw more contributions by Mr. Lasbury to the industry. He established the first state licensed hospital in the United States for migrant agricultural workers. In 1968, Senator Harrison Williams of New Jersey inspected the Windsor Labor Camp and said that the association's operation was the "most enlightened" of any employer group he had seen in the country.

In 1968, Mr. Lasbury retired. Upon Lasbury's retirement, Gerrit Krot, president of the Shade Tobacco Growers Agricultural Association, said that "no man in contemporary American agriculture contributed more to the industry's welfare."

Besides his work in the Association, he had many other interests. Lasbury was the first president of the Connecticut Morgan Horse Club. He served as a director of the Connecticut Antiquarian and Landmarks Society. He was an avid trout fisherman and fox hunter and collected antique duck decoys.

Ralph C. Lasbury, Jr. died of a heart attack on March 18, 1979, in Winter Park, Florida. He was 72. When he died, he left his wife, Cecilia Chase Lasbury; two sons, Ralph C. Lasbury and Joshua C. Lasbury; and two daughters, Cecilia Johnson and Abigail Fitzgerald.

The collection documents a significant portion of the professional activities of Ralph C. Lasbury, Jr. over a period of fifty years as the head of Connecticut regional agricultural marketing and employer groups. Minutes, correspondence, reports, leases, fiscal reports, copies of state legislative activities, and newspaper articles document the establishment, opening, and operation of the Connecticut Regional Market, a venue for the sale of Connecticut agricultural commodities. It also contains minutes, correspondence, membership lists, reports, and negotiations on behalf of the British West Indies Employers' Association. Lasbury represented the interests of tobacco growers, traveled extensively for the Association's executive committee, and met regularly with Caribbean governmental officials.
