    Lester Terrell Lasbury, 56, of Wood River, died at 8 a.m. Thursday in Denver, Colo., while attending a convention as the international staff representative for the Oil and Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union.

    He had been president and vice president of Oil Workers Local #7776 and had served on the Wood River Township Board of Auditors and the Wood River City Council.

    born in St. Louis, son of the late Edwin Woodside and Alice Josephine (McFetridge) Lasbury, he married Dorothy Jean Bryant on Nov. 14, 1947, in Wood River. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mary Lea Lasbury, and a son, James R., both of Wood Rive; three sisters, Mildred Evans of Peoria, Ada Goodman of East Alton, Alice Dvorchak of Wood River, and a brother, William of Wheeling, W. Va.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Rickey Dean Lasbury, a daughter, Terry Jo Lasbury, two brothers, Thomas and Eddie Lasbury, and two sisters, Dorothy Considine and Beatrice Huber.

    Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. The Shriners will assemble at 7 p.m., and Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. by Wood River Lodge #1062.

    The Rev. Manley Mace will conduct funeral services at Marks on Monday at 11 a.m. and burial will be in Woodland Hill Cemetery in East Alton. Memorials may be made to the Shrier's Hospital for Crippled Children.

    ALICE JOSEPHINE LASBURY, 97, who with her husband and two sons, moved from Alton to Wood River about the turn of the century when "there wasnt' anything here except watermellon patches and stickers (sandburrs)", died at 4:55 p.m. Monday at Madison County Nursting Home in Edwardsville.

    During a celebration of her 90th birthday, the nonagenarian recalled, "There wasn't even a grocery store in Wood River-just our house and a little bitty saloon where the men could get their beer."

    It was about 18 months before there were any more people in Wood River, she said.

    Born in Alton, a daughter of the late James and Mary (Beide) McFetridge, she married Edwin W. Lasbury in 1904 in St. Louis. He died February, 1939.

    Mrs. Lasbury moved from Wood River in 1963 to become the second resident at the Olin Home in East Alton.

    Surviving are two sons, Lester of Wood River and William K. of Wheeling, W. Va.; three daughters, Alice Dvorchak of Wood River, Ada Goodman of East Alton, and Mildred Evans of Wilmington, Del.; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

    Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Marks Mortuary, where prayer service will be read at 7:30 p.m.

    A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto with the Rev. William Kekeisen as celebrant, and burial will be in Valley View Cemetery at Edwardsville.

    In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Dorothy Considine and Beatrice Huber and two sons, Charles and Thomas Lasbury.

    Madison County Nursing Home has been named as a memorial.

    JAMES McFETRIDGE, JR., who along with his parents James R. and Anna Ray McFetirdge immigrated to the United States from their native Edinburgh, Scotland in 1854, landing in New York Harbor on the SS Isaac Webb on October 18 of that year. They made their way to Alton, Illinois where they established their home. James, Jr. was the husband of Mary Kathryn BEIDE and father of Isabelle, Alice and Anna McFetridge.

    James McFetridge, 75, for many years a mate on various steamers plying between St. Louis and New Orleans, died at 11:30 today at St. Joseph's hospital after a brief illness. his death was caused by pneumonia and he had been ill but five days. Yesterday his condition became worse and he was moved to the hospital.

    Mr. McFetridge was born in Scotland and was brought to America with his parents in childhood. For the past few years McFetridge had retired and lived with his sister, Mrs. Walter Moore, 915 Hampton street.

    He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edward Lasbury, Mrs. Edward Juneau, and Mrs. William Adams of Wood River; a brother, George McFetridge of Alton and a sister, Mrs. Walter Moore.

    MARY KATHRYN BEIDE McFETRIDGE DOAN, born in Fosterburg, Madison County, Illinois the daughter of Bavarian immigrants John BEIDE and Mary HELM. Mary and her five siblings were orphaned at an early age when both of their parents died in the small pox outbreak in Alton, Illinois. The Beide children were placed under the guardianship of Fritz Klinke, a neighboring farmer in Fosterburg who managed the farm and according to family lore, made off with the Beide land. Mary Beide married Scottish born JAMES McFETRIDGE on February 8, 1882 in St. Louis, Missouri. James and Mary had three daughters: Isabelle Mary, Alice Josephine and Anna Mae McFetridge. The marriage was not without its moments but proved ultimately an unhappy one and following their divorce, Mary married JOHN DOAN in Alton, Illinois on May 17, 1900. Mary and John lived with her daughter Mrs. Edward (Anna) Juneau in Wood River in their later years. Mary Kathryn Beide McFetridge Doan died in Wood River on October 20, 1930.

    Mary was also referred to as "Katie" and was the sister of Barbara Beide Shannon, John Jr., Joseph, William and Fred Beide.

    Mrs. Mary Doan, 69, wife of John Doan of Wood River, died unexpectedly Monday evening at 11 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Juneau, 613 Penning Ave.

    Mrs. Doan was born and reared in the neighborhood of Fosterburg and was a member of the Beide family there. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Beide.

    She spent the greater part of her life in Alton, moving here shortly after her marriage to James McFetridge. To this union three daughters were born. She was later married to John Doan, who survives her.

    In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. Juneau, two other daughters, Mrs. Belle Adams and Mrs. E. W. Lasbury, and two brothers, Fred Beide of York, Neb. and Joseph Beide of Galesburg survive. She also leaves 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

    Funeral arrangements are incomplete, awaiting word from the brother in Nebraska. Services will be held from the Streeper funeral home in Wood River to St. Bernard's Church.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Mary McFetridge Doan, will be held at St. Bernard's Church with the Rev. Father E. J. Douglas, the pastor, officiating, at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

    DEATH OF MR. THOMAS LASBURY, Snr.

    Mr. Thomas Lasbury, Sr. in whose memory this article appears, was born in Kensington, England, June 8, 1832. At the time of his death he had nearly attained the age of score-four years. May 18, 1858, while yet in England, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Wall White. Seven years later this noble couple emigrated to America.

    Coming to Pike County, Mr. Lasbury was a successful man in Griggsville, and in Pittsfield for many years. Those who knew him speak in the highest terms of his business integrity. He was a good and true citizen. Since retiring from business, Mr. Lasbury has lived in the west part of Griggsville.

    Up till the death of his wife, in December 1909, the Lasbury home was a model of quiet happy home life. In his home, Mr. Lasbury was best known. There his quiet manliness made the hearthstone a cheerful place. Since the death of his wife Mr. Lasbury lived with his daughter, Mrs. Mary H. Rodway. While he has not been a well man for sometime, Mr. Lasbury was a cheerful, contented man. He was not a selfish man, but in a noble sense he spent most of his life tending strictly to his own business. If all were like him peace and harmony would generally prevail.

    Thursday March 2 he appeared to feel as well as usual. He made his usual trip to town and talked in congenial and social ways to many of his dear friends. He returned to his home about 5:00P.M. and gave Mrs. Rodway a bottle of medicine from Dr. Watson, and delivered a message sent by the Dr. to her. He then inquired about the health of Mrs. Ezra Doane and family, from whom Mrs. Rodway had received a letter. He expressed his pleasure in knowing that they were well. Then there was a short struggle for breath, a bowing of the head and in less than a minute he yielded his spirit to God who gave it. Thus suddenly passed away a faithful citizen, a true man and a kind friend. It was the way he wanted to go. In him we see what the quiet service to the Episcopal Church will do to mold substantial character and a life that wears well to the end.

    To mourn the loss of this good man are four children, Thomas Lasbury of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Emma McConnell of Peoria, Illinois, Mrs. Mary H. Rodway and Mr. M.M. Lasbury of Griggsville. There are also nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Mary H. Rodway, Sunday afternoon 2:30P.M., Rev. G.E. Young officiating. Interment Griggsville Cemetery. A good man has gone to rest.

    Pallbearers were Thomas Lasbury, M.M. Lasbury, C.H. McConnell, J.W. Stead, C.P. Hatch and John Lasbury, Jr.

    A GOOD WOMAN PASSES TO HER REWARD, RESIDED HERE FORTY-FOUR YEARS

    Emma Wall White Lasbury was born at Whetstone, near London, England, April 30, 1828. After a long life, characterized by sunshine, happiness, and good cheer, she passed into the Paradise of God, on Sunday, December 5, 1909, at 1:30A.M.

    Miss Emma Wall White was united in marriage with Mr. Thomas Lasbury, May 18, 1858. After spending seven and one half years of their married life in England, Mr. and Mrs. Lasbury came to the United States of America, December 1865. For 44 years they made their home in Griggsville, Illinois. Mrs. Lasbury enjoyed the very best of health until July 1909, when she was stricken with the disease which never loosened grip until she had passed beyond the bounds of mortal ailments. Kind and faithful friends and her beloved physician did all within human power to alleviate her sufferings. During these trying months she was exceedingly patient and always, endeavoring to speak words of kindness to cheer the hearts of anxious friends. Mrs. Lasbury was a devoted communicant member of St. James Church, Griggsville, Ill. She found her prayer book a source of great comfort and consolation, even to the end of the journey she prized the leaves of the well worn comforter, when too weak to hold the entire book. Because of age the book was in leaves and she used the book as long as she could see.

    Mrs. Lasbury was best known in her home. She quietly but truly lived her religion there. It is a thing of beauty and a joy forever to exemplify true character in the home. In this respect, Mrs. Lasbury will bear the closest scrutiny. In her death a loving couple have been separated, but it is only for a little while. The fidelity of that noble husband and wife is an example in this age that is worthy of limitation. May the strong arm of the Lord be around the living husband and may the sweet remembrance of true love comfort him. Such home life has large meaning in this world. May the Church of Christ be instrumental in building up and sending forth many persons with good strong pure lives. People of good character are held in everlasting remembrance. To such person death is but a sleep as Christ has taken away the sting of death and the power of the grave. In death the Christian simply chooses the ties to the things of this world, and opens them to nobler--and inexperencable and full of delight. The grass becomes a place of sweet rest for peacemakers in the sight of the Lord in the death of a saint. The wife, mother, grandmother and friend has passed on but, the memory of her best practical virtues live and will still live. She fell asleep in the faith of Christ and the body of the blessed resurrection.

    To mourn the loss very deeply, Mrs. Lasbury leaves a beloved husband, four children, Thomas Lasbury Jr. of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. C.H. McConnell of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. M.H. Rodway, and Mrs. M.M. Lasbury of Griggsville, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. Eggar and Miss White of Wimbledon, England. Dear Friends fix your hopes in the Christ she loved and trusted.

    The funeral services were held in the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.H. Rodway, Griggsville, Tuesday, December 7, 1909, 2 P.M. The Rev. George E. Young, rector of St. James Church, Griggsville, Ill. read the comforting burial service of the church. The remains were interred in Griggsville cemetery to await the resurrection morn. May she rest in peace.

    Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Lasbury celebrated t fiftieth anniversary of their marriage last Saturday by inviting a number of their relatives and friends in to partake of a fine supper.

    An informal reception was held during the day, and many friends called to extend congratulations to this worthy couple, who have been respected residents of this place for over forty years, and are held in the highest regard by all who know them. Their marriage took place in St. George Chapel, London, fifty years ago.

    Mr. Lasbury came to America and Griggsville in 1865, landing at Quebec the day Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Mrs. Lasbury and the children landed here on Christmas day the following year.

    Mr. and Mrs. Lasbury are the parents of seven children, one of whom died in England, and two since coming to this country. Of the four remaining children, three were present with them on their anniversary, Mrs. M.H. Rodway, M.M. Lasbury of this city and Mrs. C.H. McConnell of Peoria. Another son, Thos. lives in St. Louis.

    Mrs. ANN McFETRIDGE, of 1115 East Hampton street, died yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after a lingering illness from dropsy. Mrs. McFetridge, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland came to Alton 40 years ago and was 68 years of age. She leaves five children, three sons and two daughters, all grown. the funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home.
