  After leaving Midsomer Norton Grammar School in 1932 he started an apprenticeship with Radstock Co-op. He worked there as a grocery assistant until he was called up for military service in the R.A.M.C. where he saw service at Dunkirk during the troop evacuation. He returned to work in the Co-op and became clerk to Mr Plummer (general manager) and in 1961 he became the grocery buyer for the Society. Ronald was a member of the Co-op football team and a tenor in the Midsomer Norton Male Voice Choir.
