1919 prarrie Farmer's Reliable Directory of Farmers and Breeders listed Ralph Doane as renting a 397 acre farm from his father Valentine Doane in Baylis R3 Fairmont Section 10 and owning an Essex automobile.
Newspaper Article: "Ralph Doane, a Pike County farmer, and two women evangelists who had been staying in the Doane home in Fairmount township, were instantly killed last Wednesday afternoon when the truck was struck by a fast Wabash freight train at the crossing east of the Barry Depot. Coroner R.J. Conboy conducted an inquest at the Hufnagel Undertaking Parlor that evening, and the jury returned a verdict that the three came to their death by being struck by the Wabash train at the crossing 400 feet east of the depot. Witnesses said that two cars preceded Doane's small truck up the grade and over the crossing, barely escaping being hit, or that the Doane car either stalled or skidded onto the tracks when he applied the brakes sharply as the train bore down on them. Witnesses agreed that Brakeman E.J. Kearney of Decatur, of the crew of a local freight standing on a switch at the crossing, was flagging down traffic as the fast train roared through Barry bound for Hannibal from Decatur.
The dead were: Miss Hattie McGowan, past 40, and Miss Edith Allingham, 37, who came to this country from Ireland as missionaies, and had no permanent address; and Ralph Doane, 65, a farmer, who with his family resided northwest of Perry.
Ralph Doane, the son of Valentine and Margaret Elizabeth Doane, was born November 24, 1870, at South Prairie in Fairmount Township, Pike County, Illinois. He was married to Stella Deeter, who with two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Mitchell of Milton, Pike County, IL., and Helen, at home, survive him. Mr. Doane was the eldest of four children and is survived by a brother, W.E.Doane, and a sister, Miss Jennie Doane of Griggsville, and by a brother, Fred E. Doane of Harlington, Texas, who was unable to come for the funeral on account of ill health. Funeral services were held at the family residence Saturday afternoon, Sept. 19 at 1:30. Interment was in McCord cemetery, Perry, Pike County, IL."
