  	Ernest was born and raised in England. At the age of 14, he won a scholarship to the London Royal College of Music. He went on to play with various groups including the Coldstream Guards and BBC Symphony Orchestra . In 1953, he and his wife, Joan, immigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. Ernest performed with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Tactical Air Command Band and he held the position of first clarinet with The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for 20 years.
