OLD BROAD BROOK HOME IS DESTROYED BY FIRE
The
old Lasbury homestead on Rye Street Road (really next to corner of
Rye Street and Old Ellington Road) here was destroyed by fire Monday
morning and the family of Herbert Whitehouse, occupants of the house,
lost money, war savings bonds, practically of their furniture and
clothing, and the family car.
The
building, owned by Ralph C. Lasbury, Sr., is said to be more than 100
years old. The fire reportedly started in the woodshed and a
strong northwest wind blew the flames toward the house. The
building burned so rapidly that Broad Brook and Warehouse Point
firemen were powerless to save it. Sparks blown from the fire started
several grass fires in the area. The 10-room frame house was
covered by insurance.”
There
is some typewritten info which accompanied this: "The old
residence on the farm a short distance from the village of Broad
Brook, Connecticut which was occupied by George Lasbury and his
family for many years is now no more as it was burned down Monday
morning April 26, 1943.
With
its passing another link is severed from the memories of the many
happy days spent there which many of us cherish since the latter part
of the last century. This info is in The Lasbury Family by
George E. Morgan.
The
house owned by George Lasbury, was located just west of the Broad
Brook Grammar School (1951) on Old Ellington Road in the lower school
yard (see below).
